The identity of the body that was found floating in a pond in Kulshoripatar Char area of Kuchaipatty Union under Gosairhat Upazila of Shariatpur has been confirmed. The deceased was Hanif (23), the younger son of Shahjahan Dhali, a resident of the same area.

On Tuesday morning at around 11 a.m., police from Gosairhat Police Station recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Later, it was buried as an unclaimed body at the Gosairhat Municipal Cemetery.

According to police and family sources, on the morning of July 15, Master Kabir Hawlader from Kulshoripatar Char informed the police that a body was floating in his pond.

A police team led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Noni Gopal Sarkar of Gosairhat Police Station reached the scene around 1:30 p.m., recovered the body, and sent it for autopsy at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. After the autopsy, the body was buried as unidentified at the Gosairhat Municipal Cemetery.

Later, after photos and news circulated on social media, the victim’s family members came to the police station and identified the body based on a distinctive vest, lungi, and marks on the feet. A murder case has been filed at Gosairhat Police Station naming Kajol Sarkar (24) as the prime accused along with 20 unidentified individuals. Kajol Sarkar was already in jail in another case, and he has now been shown arrested in this case. A remand application will be submitted for further interrogation. An application has been made to the District Commissioner to exhume the buried body for reburial, but permission has not yet been granted.

Kabir Hawlader, a resident of Kulshoripatar Char, said, “Hanif was a very good boy, but Kajol Sarkar is a very bad person. If Kajol is interrogated, everything and everyone involved will be revealed.”

On the night of July 18, a group of miscreants attempted to set fire to Hanif Dhali’s house using kerosene and gas lamps.

Shahjahan Dhali, the victim’s father, said, “On the afternoon of July 12, Kajol Sarkar and some other locals called Hanif away, and many people saw them chatting in the area. When he didn’t return home at night, we thought he might have gone to a relative's house. On July 15, his body was found floating in Kabir Master’s pond. The police prepared a post-mortem report and buried him as an unidentified person. Later, with the help of police and social media, my elder son identified the body from the lungi, vest, and foot marks. We have come to know that some local individuals paid money to the authorities to quickly complete the autopsy.”

Badol Gazi, a resident of Kuchaipatty Union, said, “After hearing that a body was found in Kabir Master's pond, I went there. Since the body was not yet identified, I took responsibility for the post-mortem expenses purely for humanitarian reasons.”

OC  Maksud Alam of Gosairhat Police Station said, “We were able to identify the victim by Tuesday night. A murder case has been filed by the victim’s father. An application to exhume the body has been submitted. Once permission is granted, the family will take the body for burial.”
