Mild cold waves hit 5 districts, likely to spread

Staff Correspondent

Mild cold waves are sweeping across five districts in the country as the Bangladesh Meteorological Department signalled the possibility of them spreading further.

In a regular bulletin on Thursday, the BMD reported that mild cold waves were sweeping across Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogaon, Panchagar and Chuadanga.

Meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallik told bdnews24.com: “The situation may spread. Once it spreads, it may last two or three more days.”

According to the long-term January forecast, multiple cold waves are expected this month.

The Met Office predicts one to three mild to moderate cold waves and one or two severe cold waves sweeping across the country.

A cold wave is considered severe when the minimum temperature drops below 6°C over a large area, moderate when it falls between 6°C to 8°C, and mild when it ranges from 8°C to 10°C.

Naogaon’s Badalgachhi recorded the lowest temperature - 9.1 degrees Celsius - in Bangladesh in the 24 hours until Thursday morning. The lowest temperature in Dhaka was 14.5 degrees Celsius.

The Met Office forecast said the temperature might drop 1-2 degrees Celsius at night over the next 24 hours from 9am Thursday, while daytime temperatures could rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius.

Moderate to dense fog may occur in some places of the country from midnight to the morning.
