Malta cultivation has become popular as it is profitable in Jhalakathi. As the soil and climate here are suitable, besides the large yield, the demand and market price are good, many entrepreneurs are coming forward in malta cultivation.

This crop plays an important role in enriching the agricultural economy and is also creating employment opportunities. Apart from encouraging the farmers to increase the cultivation of malta, the agriculture department is giving regular advice.

In 2017, malta cultivation started commercially in Jhalakathi district. Once planted, it takes 10 to 12 years for full yield. The use of chemical fertilizers and spraying of pesticides should be limited due to which the cost of production is also low. On the other hand, there is less hassle in the market and the price is also good because of the huge demand.

As it is more profitable with less investment, the youth of the area is leaning towards malta cultivation. At present, there are 11 malta gardens, small and large, in four upazilas of the district. Many farmers of the district have changed their fortunes in commercial cultivation of malta.

At present malta is being sold from Bagan at the rate of 60 to 70 taka per kg. The products produced here are being supplied to various surrounding districts to meet the local demand. Hundreds of people have been employed around Malta Gardens. The field staff of the Agriculture Department are conducting regular garden inspections and providing regular advice.

Jhalakathi Agricultural Extension Directorate Deputy Director Agronomist Md. Monirul Islam said that malta is currently being cultivated on 108 hectares of land in the district.

They are being coached and mentored as per the needs of entrepreneurs. From this, a total of 655 metric tons of mortar production target has been set.
