Leases of Shalmara River in Rangpur cancelled after 30-yr

Rangpur district administration has canceled the illegal lease of Shalmara River in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur and now there is a flood of joy among the people.
It is to be noted that this traditional river has been illegally occupied by some influential people of the area for 30 years. Most recently, the Rangpur district administration reclaimed a few bighas of land of the river and restoring it to its former condition. As a result, the people of this area organized a joyous procession on Monday, June 27. Prof. Dr. Tuhin Wadud, Dean of Arts Faculty of Rangpur Begum Rokeya University and Director of Riverine People, Convener of Shalmara River Protection Committee Shah Jalal and Member Secretary Abdul Halim Ranga and many others took part in the procession.
Later, a discussion meeting was organized at Shalmara Hat by the Riverine People and Shalmara River Protection Committee. Speakers at the discussion thanked all concerned including Rangpur district administration for playing an important role in saving the Shalmara River.
At the same time, everyone hopes that from now the biodiversity will return to the riparian areas of the river and the quality of life of the river dependent people will increase.
