Lack of renovation of road : Suffering of thousands of people in Cumilla Sadar
Zakir Azad, Cumilla
Due to lack of renovation for a long time, numerous potholes have formed on the main road of Cumilla Sadar South Upazila.
Among them, the condition of about 5 kilometers of the road starting from in front of the Cumilla Sadar South Model Police Station to Tongirpar Madrasa is poor. The SAWZ authorities have said that the project is being delayed as it has gone out to tender for the fourth time. As a result, thousands of people from three upazilas are suffering from a road of the Roads and Highways Department.
According to sources, thousands of people from three upazilas, including pedestrians, students, and patients, travel daily on the Hazatkhola road in Lalmai Upazila starting from in front of the Cumilla Sadar South Model Police Station and passing through Tongirpar.
People of Sadar Dakshin, Lalmai and Chauddagram upazilas use this road as an alternative road to enter Comilla city. In addition, Cumilla Sadar Dakshin Upazila Parishad, Sadar Dakshin Model Thana and Upazila Health Complex are located next to the S-R-K. Due to the terrible floods of last year and the lack of repairs for a long time, the movement of vehicles is being hampered by numerous small and large potholes and ditches in different parts of the road.
On the spot, it was seen that the asphalt of the road has come off and turned into small and large potholes. Due to the formation of mud in a small rain, the movement of battery-powered auto-rickshaws, vans and motorcycle riders is constantly facing extreme hardship.
Abdur Rahman Hirro, who regularly travels on this road, said that thousands of people from the area, including school and college students, come and go on this road every day. In many places on this road, the asphalt has come off and the soil has become several feet deep. On rainy days, most of the vehicles are victims of accidents as the potholes on the road get covered with water. Even if vehicles drive over these potholes during the dry season, the road becomes a death trap when it rains a little. However, no one has taken any effective steps to repair the road. I have been hearing for the past two years that a tender has been issued.
The reality is the opposite. If the road is not repaired quickly, a major accident can happen at any time, he said.
Akira Basher Minu, a 12th grade student of TIK Memorial Degree College in Dighirpar, Pipulia, said, we have a lot of difficulty coming to and from college on this road. It is very difficult to drive on the broken road. HSC exams are ahead, so we are forced to come to college on this road.
Auto driver Wadud said that vehicles have to ply on this road to bring and take various goods. But since the road has not been repaired for a long time, the pitch and the potholes have been removed, creating large potholes. Driving over these potholes has become risky. Many times, accidents occur due to overturning of vehicles on the road. In addition, sick and elderly patients have to suffer while being taken to the hospital. And when it rains, the potholes on the road turn into small drains. All in all, one has to take risks while driving on the road.
Khandaker Golam Mostafa, Executive Engineer of the Cumilla Roads and Highways Department, said, "There will be public suffering, but we are working sincerely to start the work on the road as soon as possible."
