Additional IGP Khondaker Rafiqul Islam has been appointed as the head of the Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU), a specialized police unit created to combat militancy and terrorism.
The transfer was made in a notification issued by the Public Security Division Police-1 Branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday. The notification was signed by Deputy Secretary Abu Sayeed.
After the fall of the Awami League government, honest, efficient and talented police officer Khondaker Rafiqul Islam was promoted to the post of DIG on August 18. After being deprived of promotion for a long time due to 'unseen' reasons, he was appointed as the Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) in September last year. Then, on October 24, he was promoted to the post of Additional IGP and posted as the head of the Special Branch (SB) of the police. However, the government transferred him to the ATU a month and 23 days after he was given the responsibility there.
Rafiqul Islam, a 15th batch officer of the BCS police cadre, started his career in the police force in 1995. Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, a talented son of Tafadia village in Kalukhali, Rajbari, was previously working as Additional DIG of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police. He has also served with distinction as Director of RAB-6 and Additional DIG of Khulna Range. In recognition of his good work, he received the President's Police Medal-PPM in 2017.
