Key suspect in Mitu murder case arrested in Ctg

Police have arrested a chargesheeted accused in former police super Babul Akter’s wife Mahmuda Akter Mitu murder case.
Khairul Islam Kalu was arrested from Salimpur area of Chattogram’ Sitakunda during a drive, said Police Bureau of Investigation’s (PBI) Assistant Police Superintendent Naima Sultana on Saturday.
He was later handed over to the Rangunia police station, she said.
Kalu had been on the run ever since the murder of Mitu. Over the past seven years, Kalu successfully evaded arrest by adopting different disguises, the ASP told reporters.
He had been employed as a doorman in a building located in Akbar Shah area of the city, she added.
In addition to the arrest warrant against him, the court also issued an order to seize his passport, effectively preventing him from leaving the country.
On June 5, 2016, unidentified assailants gunned down Mitu at the port city's GEC intersection while she was going to drop her son Mahir Akter, 7, at the pickup spot for his school bus.
Soon after the crime, Babul filed a murder case at Panchlaish Police Station against three unidentified men.
The case was transferred to the Police Bureau Investigation (PBI) in 2019 after Mitu's father, himself a retired police officer, filed a complaint against the CMP's mishandling of the case.
On May 12, 2021, the PBI submitted its final report and arrested Babul Akter in another case filed by Mitu’s father and since then he has been in prison.
