Keru & Company (Bangladesh) Limited, the country's largest sugar mill located in Darshana, Chuadanga, has incurred a huge loss in sugar production this time too.

However, the company made a record profit of 223 crore 79 lakh 32 thousand taka by selling liquor. Keru's net profit in the 2025-26 fiscal year, excluding VAT and income tax, stood at 165 crore 24 lakh taka.

Earlier, the company's net profit in the 2024-25 fiscal year was 129 crore 44 lakh 78 thousand 615 taka. Accordingly, Keru's net profit has increased by about 36 crore taka in a year.

This information has been revealed from the profit and loss account of Carew & Company for the 2025-26 fiscal year and the financial statements for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

According to the information, Carew & Company deposited about 140 crore taka in VAT and income tax to the government treasury in the 2024-25 fiscal year. And in the 2025-26 fiscal year, the amount deposited in this sector increased to about 153 crore taka.

It is learnt that in the 2024-25 fiscal year, the sugar unit among the various units of Carew incurred a loss of 62 crore 18 lakh 22 thousand 451 taka. However, the distillery unit made a profit of 190 crore 8 lakh 29 thousand 868 taka.

In addition, the commercial farm made a profit of 38 lakh 9 thousand 712 taka, the Akandbaria farm made a profit of 32 lakh 88 thousand 625 taka, the bio fertilizer unit made a profit of 78 lakh 52 thousand 569 taka and the distillery pharma unit made a profit of 5 lakh 20 thousand 476 taka.

In total, the company's net profit in the 2024-25 fiscal year stood at 129 crore 44 lakh 78 thousand 615 taka. On the other hand, the sugar unit continued to suffer losses in the recently concluded 2025-26 fiscal year.

According to preliminary estimates, this unit suffered a loss of 60 crore 19 lakh taka. However, the distillery unit made a profit of 223 crore 79 lakh 32 thousand taka, which is the highest profit from the distillery unit in the history of Keru, according to the authorities.

Besides , profits were also made from the commercial farm, Akandbaria unit, bio fertilizer and distillery pharma unit. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, Keru's net profit, excluding VAT and income tax, stood at 165 crore 29 lakh 500 taka.

Keru Managing Director Rabbik Hasan said that in the just-ended fiscal year, the distillery unit made a profit of Tk 223 crore 79 lakh 32 thousand excluding VAT and income tax. This is the highest profit ever made by a distillery unit in the company's history.

He also said, "We have been able to maintain profit growth through several initiatives such as controlling the factory's internal costs and collecting the distillery unit's outstanding debts."

Regarding the continuous losses in the sugar unit, Rabbik Hasan said, "We are not able to produce sugar according to market demand. As a result, there are huge losses in the sugar produced by threshing sugarcane. Along with this, the high interest rate on loans is further increasing the losses of the sugar unit."

Established in 1938 and nationalized in 1972, Keru & Company mainly operates a sugar mill. However, in addition to sugar, the company has a distillery, bio-fertilizer, commercial farm and pharmaceutical unit.
