Joy, Palak sued for selling NID data of 11cr people

Staff Correspondent

A case has been filed alleging that Awami League leaders Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Zunaid Ahmed Palak and 17 others sold national identification (NID) data of 11 crore Bangladeshis to different organisations for Tk20,000 crore.

Digicon facilitated the sale of about 46 types of data of each affected individual to 182 domestic and foreign companies, for reasons including the buyers’ business purposes, disregarding public and national security requirements.

An individual named Enamul Haque filed the case in this regard with the Kafrul Police Station, Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said at a press conference at Bangladesh Police Headquarters on Wednesday.

Tarique M Barkatullah, a former director of data centre at Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC), has already been arrested in connection with the glaring national security breach.

Other officials of BCC were also likely involved in the series of data thefts that started in September 2019, Talebur said.

Investigation is ongoing to determine the exact reasons behind the theft, the means being used and the stakes for the sellers in the trade, the police officer claimed.
