Mymensing Correspondent

A journalist has been hacked to death in Mymensingh. Police have arrested a man in connection with the killing.

The incident occurred in the Majhipara area of Shombhuganj around 11:30am on Saturday, said Shafiqul Islam, chief of the Kotwali Model Police Station.

The victim was identified as 55-year-old local resident Swapan Bhadra.
Swapan was a former vice-president of the Tarakanda Press Club and worked for the national daily Khobor Patra and local daily Ajker Khobor.

The arrestee is local resident Sagor Mia, 20. Police say he was ‘intoxicated’.

The victim’s nephews Jewel Bhadra and Rubel Bhadra said: “In the morning, Sagor and two others called our uncle out from his home in Majhipara. As soon as he went outside, Sagor struck him with a sharp blade on the arm. The strike cut off his hand nearly to the wrist.”
“Our uncle tried to flee for his life, slipped, and fell. Sagor then struck him brutally on the shoulder, back, and head, injuring him critically. He was recovered and rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where the doctor declared him dead.”

OC Shafiqul said: “Sagor tried to flee after the killing. Police later arrested him from Gouripur. They also recovered the blade used in the murder.”

The others involved in the killing will also be brought to justice, he said.
