Advocate Dr. Helal Uddin, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka City South unit, has called for a complete rewrite of Bangladesh’s Constitution, arguing it should reflect the aspirations of the country's students rather than undergoing piecemeal reforms.
His remarks were made during a public discussion titled "State Reform Aspirations and Constitution," organized by Ganasakti Sabha at the National Press Club’s Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall.
Dr. Helal Uddin mentioned statements from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), saying that their claim that the people of Bangladesh do not understand reforms is unfounded. “If the people of Bangladesh didn’t understand reforms, why then did they sacrifice their lives and become martyrs? They understood reforms when they gave their lives,” he said. “The people shed blood and became martyrs for reforms.”
“Those who played a role in overthrowing the fascism of 1972 and paved the way for 1975, only to later face hanging—this is a tragic fate for the nation,” he said, emphasizing the need for a rewritten Constitution.
Dr. Helal Uddin argued that the current Constitution fails to deliver justice and accused its defenders of prioritizing foreign interests over national sovereignty. “A Constitution that cannot deliver justice cannot stand in Bangladesh. Those who shed tears for this Constitution are not with Bangladesh—they are with India,” he alleged.
The Jamaat leader also directed sharp criticism toward BNP Senior Joint Secretary Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, accusing him of hypocrisy over his public stance against Indian goods. “He burns Indian products in front of the Press Club, calling for their boycott, but secretly conspires with India,” he claimed.

Anyone trying to sow division among the students and masses is an ally of India. The people of Bangladesh are united, and the students and masses are unified against India. Anyone attempting to create rifts among them or fall into India's trap will not succeed.”
