India considers Hasina a former Bangladesh PM
International Desk
India maintains its stance that Sheikh Hasina is a former prime minister of Bangladesh, the country’s foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Thursday.
Jaiswal made the remark while addressing the weekly media briefing of the ministry.
When asked if India considers Hasina the current prime minister or the prime minister in exile of Bangladesh, Jaiswal clarified that the Indian government has repeatedly referred to the Awami League chief as a former premier since her ouster on 5 August.
Hasina has been taking shelter in India since her ouster in a popular uprising on 5 August.
However, through defiant statements, she and her political party, Awami League, have been repeatedly stirring debates at home over her legal status within the Bangladesh governance framework. On Wednesday, Awami League issued a statement congratulating US president-elect Donald Trump on his reelection and mentioning Hasina as the prime minister of Bangladesh.
