Hundreds of families becoming destitute due to river erosion in Rangpur

Rangpur Correspondent

Due to the lack of allocation of necessary funds to prevent river erosion, hundreds of families are on the verge of becoming destitute along with their arable land due to the Jamuneshwari River erosion in Taraganj Upazila of Rangpur.

From Barati Palpara of Ikarchali Union of Taraganj Upazila to Narayanyan of Hariyarkuthi Union, hundreds of families of about 8 villages have been affected by the Jamuneshwari River flowing through these villages in the last few years.

Having lost their homes and cultivated land, they are now on the verge of destitution. Currently hundreds of families in these areas are at risk. Many of these families have gone to different areas due to the river erosion and are living a broken life.

Local public representatives said that the executive engineer of Syedpur Water Development Board visited the river breach area here about a year ago and assured to remedy it. But nothing worked.

Chairman of Taraganj Upazila Parishad, Anichur Rahman Liton said, after visiting the river break area of Ikarchali and Hariyarkuthi Union, several points have been given to Syedpur Water Development Board to prevent the break.

They said that they are not able to work without getting the necessary funds for this work.
