From 2015 to 2024, at least 305 Bangladeshis were killed and 282 injured by Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) along the Bangladesh-India borders.,according to a recent report by Human Rights Support Society (HRSS). This highlights serious concerns about safety and human rights violations on the border.
The deadliest year was 2020, with 51 people killed, followed by 2015 (43 killed) and 2019 (42 killed). The report also shows that in the first three months of 2025 alone, four more people were killed and ten injured.
People are being killed at the India-Bangladesh border because of a controversial "shoot-on-sight" policy where the Border Security Force (BSF) shoots unarmed civilians, including poor farmers and cattle traders. Most victims are trying to cross the border for work or smuggling due to poverty. After political changes in Bangladesh in August 2024, stricter border rules increased violence. Additionally, BSF personnel face no punishment for their actions, encouraging misuse of power.
Rangpur and Rajshahi Divisions are very dangerous because many people were killed there. Rangpur had 61 deaths from 2020 to 2024. Lalmonirhat District is also risky, with 19 deaths in the last five years. Places like Benapole in Jessore, where there are no barbed wire fences, face more attacks. These areas need better safety measures.
In 2018, India and Bangladesh agreed to stop using lethal weapons on the border. However, the killings continue despite diplomatic talks and flag meetings. According to the Law and Arbitration Center (LAC), 607 Bangladeshis have died at the hands of BSF since 2009.
Human rights groups suggest Conducting independent investigations into every killing. Stopping the "shoot-on-sight" policy immediately. Forming joint investigation teams to ensure transparency. Increasing surveillance with cameras and better fencing. Seeking help from international bodies like the UN if needed.
Experts recommend using non-lethal methods, such as rubber bullets, and improving coordination with local communities.
The killings on the Bangladesh-India border are not just numbers; they represent a humanitarian crisis. Urgent steps are needed from both governments to stop the bloodshed and ensure justice for victims. Without immediate action, this tragic loss of life will continue.
