Groom fined Tk 40,000 for child marriage in Durgapur

A mobile court in Durgapur, Rajshahi, has fined a groom named Enamul Haque (28) Tk 40,000 for child marriage. Executive Magistrate and Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Laila Nur Tanju conducted the drive in Shahabajpur village of Maria Union of the upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the mobile court sources, the wedding preparations of a 14-year-old girl were going on. At that time, Enamul Haque, son of the deceased Dayem Mandal of Naopara village, arrived at the bride's house along with the groom's party. Upon receiving the information, the mobile court reached the spot and fined the groom 40 thousand taka under Section 7(1) of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act-2017.
Confirming the matter, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Laila Nur Tanju said, "Child marriage is a punishable crime. As soon as we received the news, we went to the spot and stopped the child marriage and immediate action has been taken as per the law. No unwanted marriage that ruins the future of children will be allowed to take place. Our campaign to prevent child marriage in Durgapur will continue."
