Graft case: Yunus pleads not guilty

Nobel Laureate economist Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus and 13 others on Wednesday told a Dhaka court that they were innocent after the judge read out the charges in a graft case.

Judge Syed Arafat Hossain of the Special Judge's Court-4 of Dhaka framed the charges against them today dismissing the acquittal petition of the accused filed earlier.

After that, public prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol read out their charges. He then asked them whether they were guilty or innocent.

Dr Yunus then said that he was innocent. Other 13 accused also told that they were innocent.

Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain asked, "Do you want justice?"Then the 14 accused, including Dr Yunus, said, We want justice."

Earlier on June 2, Yunus's lawyer sought acquittal for Dr Yunus in the case during the hearing. Then the court fixed today to pass its order.

The 13 other accused are Grameen Telecom Managing Director (MD) Nazmul Islam, Directors Ashraful Hasan, Naznin Sultana, Parvin Mahmud, Md Shahjahan, Nurjahan Begum and Professor SM Huzzatul Islam Latifee, President of 'Grameen Telecom Sramik-Karmachari Union Md Kamruzzaman and its General Secretary Firoz Mahmud Hasan, lawyers Zafrul Hasan Sharif and Yusuf Ali, Union's representative Md Mainul Islam and Jatiya Workers Federation's Office Secretary Kamrul Hasan.
