The government will publish a gazette banning Jamaat-Shibir politics today (31 July) following an executive order in light of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009, Law Minister Anisul Huq has said.
“Just wait a bit. A decision will come from the Ministry of Home Affairs immediately,” the law minister told the journalists on Wednesday.
Earlier on 29 July, the leaders of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance strongly recommended banning the politics of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, for their involvement in anti-state activities.
The 14-party alliance leaders held a meeting with Sheikh Hasina, president of Awami League, in the chair at her official residence Ganabhaban against the backdrop of the quota reform movement.
“A decision was taken anonymously during the meeting to ban evil force Jamaat-Shibir politics,” Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said after emerging from the meeting.
In October 2018, the Election Commission revoked the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami, making it clear that the party would not be able to contest in the subsequent national election.
Besides, the Bangladesh Supreme Court on 1 August 2013 cancelled the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami, ruling that the party is unfit to contest the national election.
