Garment workers protest by blocking road in N'ganj
Staff Correspondent, Narayangan
Hundreds of workers from Sensible Fashion, a garment factory under Fariha Group, staged protests in Fatullah, Narayanganj, demanding the reinstatement of laid-off workers, payment of dues, and an end to mistreatment. The protest began at 8 AM on Tuesday (January 14) and continued until noon, with workers blocking the road in front of the Police Lines Gate. This caused severe traffic congestion and halted vehicle movement on the old Dhaka-Narayanganj road.
Later, the factory management, accompanied by law enforcement, negotiated with the workers, leading to the removal of the roadblock.
Protesting workers alleged that the factory management frequently lays off employees without proper justification and fails to settle dues as per labor laws. They also complained about rude behavior from the staff.
Additionally, the workers highlighted the lack of basic facilities, such as a canteen, forcing them to go without snacks or leave the premises for food. Strict policies, such as barring entry after 8:01 AM despite road traffic or after 2:01 PM during lunch breaks, have further fueled dissatisfaction. Workers demanded an end to these harsh and arbitrary rules.
They also expressed frustration over the factory’s sudden closure announcements without prior discussions about worker demands. Some accused the management of employing local goons to harass and threaten them.
Fatullah Model Police Station OC Shariful Islam confirmed the incident and stated that the situation is now under control.
