
Four sentenced to life imprisonment for murder case in Rangpur

A court in Kaunia Upazila of Rangpur has sentenced four people to life imprisonment in the murder case of Khorshed Alam over unpaid money. The court has also sentenced each of the accused to six months of non-commissioned imprisonment for non-payment of a fine of 10,000 taka.
On Tuesday, March 11, Rangpur Senior Sessions Judge Fazle Khoda Mohammad Nazir issued this order. The life imprisonment sentences are Shahidul Islam (30), son of Abdul Baten of Shyampur area of Kaunia Police Station, Russell Mia (31), son of Ayub Ali of Gadadhar area, Yunus Ali (40), son of Shah Jamal Hello of Mahesha area, and Mamun Mia (33), son of Abdul Mannan of Shyamur area.
According to the court and the complaint, due to a dispute over the money owed, Shahidul Islam called Khorshed Alam from the Bhorsha Cold Storage at around 11 pm on March 20, 2020 and strangled him to death behind the tin shed building of Mirbag Degree College. He then hung the body from a mango tree branch. In this incident, the victim's mother Khodeja Begum filed a case with Kaunia Police Station as the plaintiff. The verdict was given after considering the testimony of 17 witnesses in the case.
PP Aftab Uddin was the state's lawyer in the case, while Zahirul Alam and Abdur Rashid Chowdhury were the lawyers for the accused.
