Former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) General Secretary and Pirojpur district Awami League member Ishaque Ali Khan Panna died on Friday night while attempting to flee to India through the Tamabil border area of Sylhet.
Various sources reported that Panna suffered a cardiac arrest while climbing the Shillong hills in Meghalaya after entering India.
However, conflicting reports suggest he may have been killed in a Border Security Force (BSF) firing.
The exact circumstances of his arrival in Shillong and his death remain unclear.
A close associate of Panna, currently in Kolkata, confirmed his death to Bangladeshi media, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The source said, “After the fall of the Awami League government, Ishaque Ali Khan Panna sought refuge in India after hiding for a few days. He crossed the border and began ascending a hill in Shillong on Friday night. Unfortunately, he suffered a heart attack during the climb and passed away.”
Ishaque Ali Khan Panna served as the General Secretary of the Chhatra League in 1994. Professionally, he was the Chairman of Diamond Life Insurance Company Limited.
After the Awami League council in 2012, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the party’s central sub-committee and later served on various sub-committees. He remained a member of the Pirojpur district Awami League until his death.
