Five jailed for life in Manikganj smuggling gold case

A court in Manikganj has sentenced five people to life-term imprisonment for smuggling gold in Manikganj.
Senior District and Sessions Judge Joyosree Samaddar pronounced the verdict on Wednesday in presence of the convicts in the court.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each, in default, to serve one more year in jail.
The convicted are Eahia Amin, Sheikh Aminur Rahman, Md Moniruzzaman Roni, Sheikh Zahidul Islam and Johirul Islam Tarek. They all are the residents of Satkhira, Jashore, Munshiganj and Laxmipur districts.According to the prosecution, on October 4, 2018, RAB arrested five of them from a Benapol-bound passenger bus from Tara area on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway and recovered 44 kilograms of gold after searching their bodies.
Later, a case was filed with Manikganj Police Station on October 5 against the arrested. After investigation, the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case submitted a charge-sheet against the accused.
