Fazlul Azim Fish Ghat inaugurated in Hatiya
Sabbir Ibne Siddique, Hatiya ( Noakhali)
A new and modern fish landing center, named 'Engineer Fazlul Azim Fish Ghat,' was formally inaugurated for fishermen in the Suryamukhi Bazar area of Hatiya, an isolated island sub-district of Noakhali. The inauguration ceremony, held on Friday afternoon on the eastern side of Suryamukhi Bazar, saw enthusiastic participation from people of various professions, fishermen, and fish traders.
The event was graced by Hatiya Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Azmal Huda as the chief guest. The program was presided over by prominent fish trader Mohammad Ahsan. Special guests included former Chairman of Char Ishwar Union Abdul Halim Azad, Member Secretary of Upazila Swechchhasebak Dal Sumon Talukdar, Convener of Pourashava Jubo Dal Momin Ullah Rashel, fish trader Arif Uddin, and former UP member Abul Bashar, along with other local dignitaries, traders, and fishermen.
Speakers at the event stated, “Fishermen in Hatiya have long been using the Suryamukhi Ghat to sell their fish. However, due to the lack of a designated fish market or ghat, they were deprived of fair prices. With the launch of Engineer Fazlul Azim Fish Ghat, fishermen will now have a suitable environment for selling fish and receive fair prices.”
Several initiatives have been undertaken to transform the ghat into a fully functional fish landing center. These include determining fish prices through direct auctions, appointing workers to manage the ghat, forming a management committee for overall supervision, ensuring security and order at the ghat premises, and decorating the area with colorful flags to turn the inauguration day into a festive occasion.
Fish trading began immediately after the inauguration, receiving an overwhelming response from local traders. It is known that, apart from this ghat, Hatiya has 10 other major fish ghats, where approximately 10,000 fishermen bring fish daily via boats and fishing trawlers.
Locals believe that this ghat will not only benefit fishermen but also transform the economic landscape of Hatiya. In particular, it will become a significant milestone in the coastal fish farming and marketing system.
