Every child deserves to be safe, inside, outside of classroom : MJF calls for accountability, effective child protection in madrasas

Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) expresses shock and outrage over recent media reports of sexual abuse and harassment of children in Madrasas across Bangladesh. MJF calls for immediate action to protect children, ensure fair and impartial investigations, hold those responsible accountable under the law, and establish effective Sexual Harassment Prevention Committees in all educational institutions.

Recent media reports from Gazipur, Tongi, Savar and Kushtia have brought allegations of sexual abuse involving young madrasa students to public attention. However, the actual number of cases is likely far higher than those reported, as many children may remain silent due to fear, stigma or pressure. The reports also raise concerns about threats and attempts to silence complaints. All allegations must be investigated fairly and without delay, with the safety, dignity and well-being of children given the highest priority.

Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of Manusher Jonno Foundation in a statement on Saturday said: “Every child deserves to grow up in a safe and caring environment. Parents send their children to educational institutions trusting that they will learn and build a better future. No child should fear the people responsible for their care and education. When a child reports abuse, we must listen, take immediate action and ensure their safety. Parents must encourage their children to speak up about any abuse or inappropriate behaviour and assure them that they will be heard, believed and supported. Children must never be blamed, threatened or silenced for speaking out.

MJF has long advocated for stronger child protection measures and accountability in educational institutions. Following the High Court’s landmark guidelines issued in 2009 and its subsequent directions, MJF has repeatedly called for the formation and proper functioning of Sexual Harassment Prevention Committees in madrasas and other educational institutions.

MJF urges the Ministries of Women and Children Affairs, Social Welfare, and Education, along with madrasa authorities and local administrations, to strengthen child protection, ensure compliance with the High Court’s guidelines, and establish effective Sexual Harassment Prevention Committees and safe reporting channels. MJF also calls for prompt and impartial investigations, accountability under the law, and medical, psychosocial and legal support for affected children, while protecting their privacy and dignity.
