Staff Correspondent
Dhaka Deputy Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Farida Khanom said, it is everyone's shared responsibility to ensure safe movement, independent living, and social dignity for visually impaired individuals.
She emphasized that visually impaired people are not objects of pity but are citizens entitled to equal rights and dignity in society.
She made the remarks as the chief guest at a ceremony hosted at Dhaka DC Office on Thursday to observe World White Cane Safety Day 2026.
During the program, the Dhaka District Administration distributed 200 white canes to visually impaired individuals through representatives of the 'Alobhita Disabled Self-Reliant Society' and the 'Progoti Protibondhi Manobkollan Sangstha' in the presence of organization members.
Speaking at the event, DC Farida Khanom noted that visual impairment does not define or limit a person's talent, potential, or aspirations. She remarked that the resilience and self-confidence of visually impaired people serve as an inspiration to all, calling for empathy, respect, and tangible support rather than sympathy.
Describing the white cane as an essential aid for independent mobility and a symbol of confidence, she stressed that providing white canes is only a starting point. She urged the creation of accessible urban environments, including safe sidewalks, barrier-free pathways, inclusive public transportation, and accessible public service facilities.
Highlighting the everyday challenges faced by visually impaired individuals when navigating roads, using transport, or accessing public services, she called for combined government initiatives and civic awareness to eliminate structural barriers.
Reaffirming the district administration's commitment, Farida Khanam assured that measures will be taken to streamline access to civic services so that visually impaired citizens face no discrimination, neglect, or unnecessary harassment at government facilities.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries, Shihab, a visually impaired recipient, said , "Since we cannot see, the white cane guides us like a friend. This cane will make our daily journeys much safer and easier."
