Election still possible within 90 days after dissolving parliament: BNP
Staff Correspondent
Time is still adequate to hold a free and fair election under a nonparty caretaker government after dissolving the current parliament, BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan said on Tuesday.
The foreigners are being understood that the failure of holding the 12th parliamentary election by January 7 could lead to a constitutional vacuum in the country, said while addressing a function in Dhaka on Tuesday.
“There is still ample time to hold a free and fair election under a nonparty caretaker government if the president dissolves the parliament, as stipulated by the constitution, allowing for the election within the 90 days,” he said.
Khan also expressed his party’s willingness to engage in a dialogue with the ruling quarter particularly if it is held to facilitate a free and fair election under a nonpartisan caretaker administration.
The ruling party leaders are deliberately denying the possibility of dialogue in the pretext of the time constraint, he said, adding that dialogue is a must to get rid of the country’s prevailing political uncertainty.
Blaming the ruling party for hanging on to power forcibly, the BNP leader said his party will never take part in the election under the current Hasina-led administration.
He also called upon the government to ensure immediate unconditional release of BNP men who were implicated with fictitious cases.
Khan also called upon his party men not to be intimidated by the suppressive and oppressive actions of the government ahead of the national election.
