Dredging of dying Kumar River urgently needed
Md Abdul Alim, Shailkupa (Jhenaidah)
The Kumar River in Shailkupa, once a lifeline of the region, now stands on the brink of extinction.
This river, which was once vibrant and full of life, has seen a dramatic decline, transforming from a bustling waterway to a near-dry relic of its former self. In its heyday, the Kumar River was a thriving hub of commercial activity. Boats and launches frequently traversed its waters, transporting goods and passengers alike.
The riverbanks were dotted with bustling markets, where potters brought their clay wares and traders sold jaggery in large quantities. Farmers transported their harvests, including rice and jute, by boat to the local markets. Fishermen cast their nets in the rich waters, and the riverbank communities relied on the river for bathing, washing clothes, and retting jute. We, too, have fond memories of our childhood days spent diving and swimming in the river, participating in competitions with friends. But now, the once-deep waters are nearly dry, and the Kumar River is on the verge of disappearing entirely. It is hard to imagine that our future generations will ever witness the river's lost glory.
Immediate action is needed to save this historic river. Without intervention, the Kumar River's existence will be erased by the relentless march of time. We urge the authorities and the community to come together to restore the Kumar River, preserving its heritage and rejuvenating its waters for future generations.
If we act now, there is still hope to bring back the river's youth and vitality, securing its place in our region's history for years to come.
