Disunity in FOBANA: Four separate conventions set to take place across US, Canada

USA Bureau

Thirty-nine years after its inception with the pledge to unite the North American Bangladeshi diaspora, preserve Bengali culture among the youth, and assert community rights, the Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America (FOBANA) has fallen into disarray, leading many patrons and community members to turn their backs.

Over time, FOBANA has drifted away from its original traditions, evolving into a platform for individual self-assertion and corporate capture by affluent figures. The broader community focus, Bangladeshi socio-economic development, and youth engagement—though prominently featured on promotional posters—are increasingly absent in practice. Instead, promotional materials are heavily dominated by commercial artists, actors, and actresses.

Marking its four-decade milestone, FOBANA is split into four distinct conventions across New York, Orlando, Los Angeles, and Toronto over the upcoming Labor Day weekend (September 4–6).

New York Convention: Organized by the NRB Association, the 3-day New York event will be held at the Evangel Christian Church Auditorium in Astoria, Long Island City (3920 27th Street, NY 11101) under the theme "Chetonay 71 Hridoye Bangladesh" (1971 in Consciousness, Bangladesh in Heart). Dedicated to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, organizers note that this segment will emphasize the spirit of the Liberation War. Led by Central Committee Chairman Zakaria Chowdhury, Executive Secretary Dewan Moniruzzaman, Convener Nurul Amin Babu, and Member Secretary Monjur Quader, the free-entry convention features seminars on empowerment, immigration, literature, business networking, and youth engagement.

Los Angeles Convention: Hosted by the Bangladesh Association of California at the Hilton Universal City in Los Angeles, this 3-day conference carries the slogan "Probas Bangladesh on the Path of Advancement." Host Committee Convener Dr. Zainul Abedin confirmed that 54 organizations have registered, with 22 scheduled to perform. Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury and the Mayor of Los Angeles are slated to attend the opening, while industrialist Kali Pradeep Chaudhuri will deliver the keynote address. FOBANA Central Chairperson Rabiul Karim Belal and Executive Secretary Khaled Rouf lead this segment.

Orlando Convention: Organized by the Bangladesh Association of Central Florida, the Orlando convention will take place at the Holiday Inn Resort Kissimmee by the Park. Executive Secretary Rahim Ranihal highlighted that the event will feature seminars and performances from various US and Canadian organizations. Led by Zahid Hasan, Anwar Hossain Sentu, Russel Mia, Shamim Mridha, and A.K.M. Hossain Hitu, the program features prominent cultural figures, including Pori Moni, Sania Sultana Liza, Imran Mahmudul, Dinat Jahan Munni, Toma Mirza, and Saju Khadem.

Toronto Convention: In Canada, the Toronto segment will take place at the Don Valley Hotel & Suites, led by Gias Ahmed, Shah Newaz, Dr. Abu Zubaer Dara, and Firoz Ahmed. Convener Dr. Dara stated during a New York press briefing that the convention aims to bring together attendees across political affiliations. Bangladesh High Commissioner to Canada Nahida Sobhan is expected to attend. World-renowned magician Jewel Aich and acclaimed actress Farida Akhtar Babita will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards at the event, alongside cultural performances by Dolly Sayontoni, Akhi Alamgir, Pintu Ghosh, Dolly Sayontoni, and other international artists.
