A mentally challenged youth named Pradip Sarker (40) drowned in a pond at Kotalipara in Gopalganj.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Botbari village under Radhaganj Union of the upazila. The deceased was the son of late Kshitish Chandra Sarker of the same village.
According to local sources, Pradip Sarker woke up early in the morning and went to the pond ghat to brush his teeth. When he was not seen for a while, family members started looking for him. At that time, they found his toothbrush lying near the pond ghat, which raised suspicion. With the help of locals, they began searching the pond and also informed the Fire Service.
Before the Fire Service could arrive, locals recovered Pradip Sarker’s body from the pond with a fishing net around 10 a.m. The entire village has been plunged into mourning following the incident.
OC of Kotalipara Police Station, Hafizur Rahman said, the deceased was mentally challenged. The family has requested not to conduct an autopsy. A decision will be made according to the instructions of higher authorities.
