Dipu Moni returns to Munshiganj jail after bidding final farewell to husband

Staff Correspondent

Awami League leader and former minister Dipu Moni has returned to Munshiganj District Jail after attending the funeral of her husband, Supreme Court lawyer Tawfique Nawaz.

She was taken back to jail at 5:58pm, within her 12-hour parole period, Munshiganj District Magistrate Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi said.

Dipu Moni was taken from the jail to Dhaka by prison van under tight police security at 6:15am. She reached her Kalabagan home at 9am, where her husband’s body had been taken.

She later attended the funeral prayers at Gulshan Azad Mosque and his burial at Banani Graveyard.

“We applied for four days of parole. The district administration approved 12 hours,” her lawyer Faisal Islam said.

He said Moni had completed two years in detention and had previously sought permission several times to meet her ailing husband outside prison, but was denied.

Under prison laws and regulations, 12-hour daytime parole falls within the district magistrate’s authority, Faisal said.

“We received the parole lawfully. The government could have granted her parole for a longer period,” he said.

Tawfique, 76, died at Continental Hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday night after suffering from kidney and liver complications for a long time.

A Supreme Court lawyer and classical music practitioner, he had suffered a stroke in 2019.

Moni remains in custody in several cases filed after the 2024 student-led movement, despite securing bail in some cases from the High Court.

A previous seven-day parole request, citing her husband’s illness, was rejected in May.
