Dengue cases surge in Godagari,  panic among residents

Muktar Hossain, Godagari (Rajshahi)

Dengue infection rates are rising rapidly across Godagari Upazila in Rajshahi district, causing growing panic among local residents, particularly in the municipality area, as diagnostic test positivity rates continue to climb.

Data gathered from private hospitals and diagnostic centers across the upazila reflect a concerning trend, with health workers reporting that an average of 5 out of every 15 tested individuals are testing positive for the mosquito-borne virus.

While official figures at public facilities remain lower, government medical teams have stepped up testing and treatment services across the upazila. Both primary public health centers in Godagari have reported an adequate supply of dengue testing kits and medical stock.

At the Godagari Upazila Health Complex in Premtoli, three patients tested positive for dengue over the past 15 days. One of the patients, a 70-year-old man, was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) due to deteriorating health, while the remaining two continue to receive treatment at the complex.

Similarly, at the Godagari 31-Bed Hospital, 211 individuals were tested for dengue through October 20, with 11 cases returning positive. Five of these patients have since recovered and been discharged, two remain admitted, and two were referred to RMCH for advanced care. Local authorities identified Godagari Pourashava as the area facing the highest risk of transmission.

Speaking on the situation, Dr. Syed Md. Suman, Health Officer at Godagari 31-Bed Hospital, said, "We have sufficient testing kits in stock and specialized care facilities for dengue patients. Out of 211 tests this month, 11 were positive. Five have recovered and discharged. We urge residents not to panic and to seek immediate testing at government hospitals upon developing fever."

Dr. Muhammad Hasanul Zahid, Upazila Health and Family Welfare Officer at Premtoli Upazila Health Complex, emphasized early detection, advising rural and marginalized communities to visit local health centers without delay upon experiencing symptoms.

Addressing public safety and preventive measures, Godagari UNO  Israt Jahan said,  the local administration is coordinating with health departments and local representatives to intensify anti-mosquito drives and cleanliness campaigns. She added that awareness campaigns using loudspeakers and leaflets will be conducted to promote larva eradication and environmental sanitation.
