On August 21, 2004, during the then BNP-Jamaat coalition government, a barbaric grenade attack was carried out on the Awami League public meeting on Bangabandhu Avenue to protest the conspiracy to kill Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina and to demand punishment for those involved.

On August 21, a protest march came out from the Upazila Parishad premises on Monday afternoon. The procession circumambulated the important roads of the city and met at Bhuapur Ibrahim Khan Govt. College grounds and held a protest meeting.

Upazila Awami League vice-president Nurul Islam Talukder Mohan presided over the meeting. Central Jubo League Presidium Member Advocate Mamunur Rashid Mamun, District Awami League Joint General Secretary Subhash Chandra Saha, Agriculture and Cooperative Affairs Secretary Abu Nasser, Bhuapur Upazila Parishad Chairman Mocha: Nargis Begum, Vice Chairman Monirul Islam Babu, former General Upazila Awami League spoke at the meeting. Secretary Tarekul Islam Bidyut, District Women Awami League President Nachima Bachid, District Chhatra League President Sohanur Rahman Sohan and others.

Leaders and workers of district and upazila Awami League and sister organizations of Awami League were present.

In the protest meeting, Member of Parliament Tanveer Hasan Chhota Monir said that conspirators have tried to kill Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, but Allah has always protected the beloved leader of the people. He immediately demanded exemplary justice for those involved in this incident.
