Demonstration to stop sale of ganja in Melandaha

A protest march, rally and memorandum to demand on anti-Islamic activities including obscenity along with ganja sale in the month-long Baisakhi Orosh Mela around of Durmuth Hazrat Shahkamal (RA) in Melandaha Upazila under Jamalpur district on Thursday noon. It was organized by Ittefaqul Ulama Melandaha branch.

Mufti Shamsuddin, president of Jamalpur District Ittefakul Ulama, presided over the protest meeting at the mosque gate that day. Melandaha Ittefakul Ulama general secretary Mufti Solaiman Hossain, organizing secretary Mufti Noor Mohammad, education and cultural affairs secretary Hafez Abdul Wahab, publicity secretary Maulana Irafil among others spoke.

Speakers in the gathering said that they expressed anger at the open gathering and sale of ganja in at least 400 shelters, including more than 300 deras and more than 100 smaller shelters around the fair, saying that dancers are also spreading obscenity at some spots in the fair. The youth has become dangerously addicted to drugs.

A local public representative, a servies holder and another narcotics team accused of masterminding the operation. The title of development of freedom fighters is being used as a tool to accept wrong working.

Abdul Karim, the former commander of the Melandaha moktijusdha sangsad and freedom fighter said that the government has not neglected the welfare of the freedom fighters. He condemned and protested the use of freedom fighter's name in such a despicable act. Muktijoddha Sangsad administrator and UNO Mahbuba Haque said - I have inspected the reality and taken immediate action. I have banned the

use of freedom fighters' names. On the advice of the Chairman of the Upazila Parishad, I have given the letter to the two Chairman of the area and the OC.

Officer-in-charge of Melandaha police station (OC) Raju Ahmed said that they have taken approval for 15-day entertainment Vichitra program for the welfare of freedom fighters. Profanity will be closed. And the campaign against the sale of marijuana continues.

A few people have been arrested and challaned in court along with ganja. In this regard, District Commissioner Safiur Rahman said that the administration has not given permission to spread any obscenity in the name of the fair. Superintendent of Police Kamruzzaman said that the matter is being investigated.
