Death toll rises to 12 amid nationwide clashes

At least 12 people were killed in clashes across the country on Sunday as the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement enforced their non-cooperation movement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet.

Of those, three were killed in Pabna, two each in Munshiganj, Rangpur, and Bogura, and one each in Magura and Sirajganj.

Since the morning, protesters clashed with police joined by Awami League activists in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and other parts of the country.

Munshiganj

In Munshiganj, two people were killed and at least 20 were injured in clashes between non-cooperation movement protesters, police, and Awami League members. The incident occurred near Super Market area at around 10:45am on Sunday.

Dr Abu Hena Mohammad Jamal, Superintendent of Munshiganj General Hospital, confirmed the deaths but could not provide the identities of the deceased. Both were male, aged between 22 and 25.

Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police Thandar Khairul Hasan said, "The exact number of casualties is still unknown, but the police did not fire any shots."

Magura

In Magura, Mehedi Hasan (Rabbi), the senior joint general secretary of the district's Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was killed in clashes with police and Awami League activists. He was shot around 11:30am in the Parnanduail area.

Dr Mohsin Uddin, Director of Magura 250-Bed Hospital, said that Hasan was brought to the hospital at around noon and succumbed to his injuries at 12:30pm. His body showed gunshot wounds. At least ten others have been admitted to the hospital with injuries.

Bogura

In Bogura, thousands of protesters have blocked key roads, setting fires at various points in the city. The situation turned tense, particularly in Bogura town and Dupchanchia upazila. As of 1:00pm, two fatalities have been reported.

Witnesses reported that police fired shots when Dupchanchia police station was attacked.

Dr Shamsunnahar, health officer at Dupchanchia Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that 12 people received treatment there, including one bullet-hit person who was brought dead. The deceased has been identified as Monirul Islam (24) from Kahaloo Upazila.

Four critically injured individuals have been transferred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College (SZRMC).

Dr Abdul Wadud, Deputy Director of SZRMC, said that another unidentified man was brought dead to the hospital.

As of 1:00pm, nine injured individuals are receiving treatment at SZRMC, with the number expected to rise.
