Deadline for turning Titumir college into university illogical: Education ministry
Staff Correspondent
The Ministry of Education has described the deadline set by the agitating students of Government Titumir College to convert the institution into an independent university by Saturday afternoon as illegal.
The students have been protesting for the last three consecutive days to press their demand and eventually issued a threat to the government to fulfill the demand by 4 pm on Saturday.
In response to the ultimatum, the education ministry in a statement floated for the media this afternoon, said that there is no logic in continuing the movement, issuing a deadline.
The government is informed about the demand and a specialised committee headed by the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) is now working to set up a separate university with the seven traditional colleges located in the capital Dhaka, it said.
The committee is working on putting special importance to the demand for turning Titumir college into an independent university. Meanwhile, the specialized committee has started discussions with the representatives of the seven colleges, according to the press note.
The present government’s one of the key targets is to ensure all sorts of educational facilities, including improvement of standard and qualities of the seven colleges and these issues will remain under prime consideration of the incumbent administration, it said.
The ministry also called upon the agitating students to remain patient and refrain from disrupting public life and the smooth functioning of the education system of their respective colleges.
The incumbent government is always sincere and sympathetic to meet the justified demand of the students and teachers of all levels, said the ministry press note.
