Harun-or-Rashid, chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), has been transferred to DMP's crime and operations department.
The transfer came in the wake of Harun’s treatment of key student leaders of the job quota reform movement. Additional Commissoner Ashrafuzzaman would be the new DB chief, according to a Wednesday circular signed by DMP chief Habibur Rahman.
Under Harun, DB has detained six key leaders of the movement, including Nahid Islam, Sharzis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah, for their “own safety.”
Under Harun’s watch, DB also allegedly forced the six leaders into issuing a video statement where they withdrew their movement for reforming quota system in government jobs, and for ensuring justice for those killed and injured during the protest.
Later, DB officers posted a facebook image of the student leaders having lunch on DB premises, drawing further criticism from netizens. The High Court also rebuked DB officers for posting the image.
These incidents were reportedly discussed at a meeting of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance held 29 July at Gonobhaban in the capital.
