Data, satistics most vital assets of govt balance sheet: Amir Khosru Chowdhury
Minister for Finance and Planning Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury asserted on Sunday that accurate and reliable data constitutes the most critical asset on a government’s balance sheet, laying the foundation for future public policy and economic planning.
Addressing as the chief guest a discussion meeting organized on the occasion of "National Statistics Day 2026" at the Statistics Bhaban auditorium in Agargaon, the Finance Minister emphasized that data will no longer be kept confidential but will remain open to all to render the economy people-oriented, transparent, and credible.
Highlighting the administration's broader goals, the Finance Minister stated that the government aims to ensure the democratization of the economy alongside political democratization. He noted that political democracy loses its essence if the economy fails to serve the public interest.
Clarifying the government's stance, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury declared that full operational independence has been granted to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
The Minister clarified that forensic audits are intended to identify the root causes of systemic issues rather than criticize past initiatives.
Presided over by Statistics and Informatics Division Secretary Md. Firoz Sarkar, the event was attended as special guests by Political Adviser to the Prime Minister (Ministerial rank) and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Planning Zahir Uddin Swapan, Finance and Planning Adviser to the Prime Minister (Ministerial rank) Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, and Minister of State for Planning Md. Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki.
