Cyclone Remal : Power supply to 2.6m customers in coastal areas disrupted

Staff Correspondent

The power supply to around 2.6 million customers in different coastal areas of the country has been disrupted due to the impact of Cyclone 'Remal'.

The authorities for rural electrification have shut down power supply in the vulnerable areas to prevent accidents caused by falling trees due to strong winds in the coastal regions.

A director of the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB), on condition of anonymity last Sunday night, said, "To avoid accidents due to the cyclone, the power supply to 2,569,500 customers under 14 rural electrification samities has been suspended.

The leave of the electrical workers in the coastal regions has been canceled. Each samity's workers have been kept ready to restore the power situation as quickly as possible immediately after the cyclone ends."

"Among the most affected areas without power are Patuakhali, Bagerhat, Bhola, Pirojpur, Satkhira, and Jhalakathi districts. The power supply to 600,000 customers in Patuakhali has been suspended. In Bagerhat, 450,000 customers, in Bhola district 425,000 customers, and in Pirojpur 300,000 customers are without power," he added.
