Country's first ultra-high-resolution,  liverthyroid diagnostic machine inaugurated at BMU's NINMAS

The National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS) under the Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) inaugurated the country’s first Resona A20 ultra-high-resolution machine, capable of measuring liver fat quantification and accurately diagnosing liver and thyroid cancers.

To mark the launch, the Research Cell and the Ultrasound and Color Doppler Division of NINMAS organized a scientific seminar titled "Beyond Conventional Ultrasound: Elastoscan & Fat Quantification with High Resolution Ultrasound" at the Kamal Uddin Ahmed Auditorium on Tuesday.

Presiding over the seminar, NINMAS Director and Bangladesh Thyroid Society President Profe Dr. A.K.M. Fazlul Bari stated that approximately 33 percent of people in Bangladesh suffer from fatty liver conditions, while nearly 16 percent are affected by chronic liver disease and liver cancer, and 2 percent suffer from thyroid cancer. Against this backdrop, medical technology firm Mindray supplied the advanced Resona A20 ultra-high-resolution unit to Bangladesh for the first time.

Dr. Bari highlighted that the new machine incorporates groundbreaking modalities—such as Shear Wave Elastography and Stain Elastography—enabling precise fat quantification, fibrous tissue grading, cirrhosis assessment, and early-stage detection of liver and thyroid cancers. He added that the installation of its ultra-high-resolution probe (33 MHz) at NINMAS will also allow physicians to accurately diagnose diseases related to the skin, hair follicles, nails, subcutaneous pathology, and the lymphatic system.

During the event, technical papers on liver elastography, ultra-high-resolution thyroid elastography, and fat quantification were presented by Anup Kumar Kundu and Johanna Wong. A practical demonstration session was subsequently conducted for over a hundred attending physicians, illustrating ultrasound application in evaluating liver fat deposits and malignant tumors.

Head of the Scintigraphy Division Prof Dr. Nasreen Sultana delivered the welcome address. Senior physicians, scientists from BMU and NINMAS, and Mindray representatives led by Manager Jewel Rana attended the session. 

The seminar concluded with vote of thanks delivered by Prof Dr. A.K.M. Fazlul Bari to Research Division Head Dr. Papree Mutsuddy, Ultrasound and Color Doppler Division Head Dr. Farhana Haq, and event presenter Dr. Farzana Rahman Ananya.
