Continues rains causing flood in Cumilla

Cumilla Correspondent

The water of Cumilla Gomti river is increasing at an unusual speed due to the continuous rains of the last two days and the hill flows coming down from India. The water has already crossed the threshold. Hundreds of families inside the dam have taken shelter in the dam due to the sudden rise in water.

Many houses have already been damaged. Thousands of people on the banks of the Gomti River are leaving their homes in fear. It has been informed by the district administration that the matter has been kept under observation whether the dam is getting damaged anywhere.

Temporary repairs have also been made to some vulnerable areas. This disaster has been caused due to continuous rains and the rise of Gomti river in the Indian hills. On the other hand, heavy rains and Indian floods have flooded most of the border areas of Chouddagram, Burichong, Devidwar upazila and Kakari, Gomti rivers. About half a million people there are trapped in water.

On the other hand, the villages along the Dakatia river in the southern part of Nangalkot upazila have been waterlogged for two days today. On Wednesday around 3:00 p.m., the water flowed 50 cm above the danger line, according to PWD sources. Meanwhile, multiple teams of the army are monitoring the river protection dam, said Deputy Commissioner Khandkar Mu. Mushfiqur Rahman. Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman, executive engineer of PWD, said, "Sand bags are being given to the problem areas of the Gomti river protection dam.

About 10 to 15 cm of water is rising every hour. Now the water has crossed the boundary. Thus, if the water flow continues to increase, it may pose a threat to the dam. However, I have urged the people of the riverside to be careful not to panic. If you see a situation where there is a crack in the dam or there is a risk, I urge you to inform the town or the local administration. People concerned said that Gomti Char of Adarsh Sadar, Burichong, Brahmanpara, Devidwar, Muradnagar, Titas and Daudkandi areas of the district were submerged in water since Tuesday night.

Debidwar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Nigar Sultana said that some parts of the dam are dangerous. Since morning, sandbags are being dumped at the vulnerable points of the dam. Meanwhile, people trapped in water at Gomti Char in Adarsh Sadar Upazila of the district have been evacuated to a safe place.

The district administration has opened 3 shelters with their help. Cumilla Deputy Commissioner said that the district administration, town council, army and the upazila administration and union council of the related area are working to protect the Gomti river dam. Shelters have been opened at Shaldhar Primary School, Amratali Handicapped High School and Dhaneshwar High School in Sadar Upazila for flood victims.
