Widespread public resentment has erupted in Ramgarh Upazila of Khagrachhari hill district over arbitrary fare hikes by CNG-driven auto-rickshaw operators and the routine harassment of commuters.

Public anger reached a boiling point following specific allegations of highly aggressive, abusive, and hostile behavior directed at passengers by an influential leader holding the position of Treasurer within the local CNG Owners-Workers Association.

According to aggrieved passengers, auto-rickshaw drivers across various routes in Ramgarh have been charging extortionate fares at will, a practice local commuters described as predatory. Anyone attempting to protest or query the sudden price hikes is reportedly subjected to severe verbal abuse and humiliation.

Commuters expressed deep frustration that an official holding a responsible administrative rank within the transport union, such as the treasurer, is leading the hostility against ordinary citizens. Passengers argued that while his official mandate dictates maintaining operational discipline and protecting passenger rights, his direct involvement in mistreating commuters has left traveling citizens completely vulnerable to exploitation.

Local conscious citizens observed that the implicit backing and confrontational stance of top union leaders have emboldened general drivers to hold commuters hostage. Consequently, ordinary citizens, low-income laborers, students, and office-goers navigating these routes daily are facing severe financial extortion and mental harassment.

In light of the ongoing transport deadlock, the residents of Ramgarh and victimized passengers have urgently appealed to the local administration and law enforcement agencies.

They have called for immediate and strict regulatory intervention to dismantle the fare anarchy, penalize errant transport workers, and guarantee the safety and rights of general commuters.
