Bangladesh is bracing for multiple cold waves this January, with temperatures forecasted to plummet further across the country, including the capital, Dhaka.

Dense fog and chilly winds have already disrupted daily life, intensifying the challenges faced by millions, particularly the underprivileged.

Dhaka recorded its lowest temperature at 16.3°C on Wednesday (Jan 8), while Jashore reported the country’s lowest at 12.8°C, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Meteorologist Sahana Sultana said that the density of fog in Dhaka is higher than the previous day and is expected to persist, limiting sunlight to brief appearances after noon.

The day temperature is expected to drop by 1-2°C, while the night temperature may decline by 2-3°C, resulting in an overall increase in the feeling of cold.

The chilly conditions are forecasted to intensify from Thursday, with dense fog likely to disrupt road, air, and river transport.

International weather monitoring agencies echo these predictions, suggesting a prolonged spell of fog and cold across South Asia, driven by an extended subcontinental high-pressure area stretching to West Bengal and the adjacent regions.

This system is complemented by a seasonal low-pressure zone over the south Bay of Bengal, amplifying the impact.

Cold Waves Expected to Grip Bangladesh

The BMD’s long-term January forecast indicates that several cold waves, including mild and moderate ones, may sweep across the country.

During these cold spells, the minimum temperature could dip as low as 4°C in some regions. The chilly winds accompanying the cold waves are expected to exacerbate the already harsh conditions.

Impact on Daily Life

Dense fog and low visibility have brought significant disruption to daily activities. Low-income groups, including day laborers and rickshaw-pullers, are bearing the brunt of the unusual cold, struggling to stay warm and maintain their livelihoods.

Commuters and travelers are also facing delays due to the dense fog impacting road, air, and river transport.

The Met office predicts mainly dry weather with partly cloudy skies in Dhaka and surrounding areas. Moderate to dense fog is likely from midnight to morning, lingering until noon in some locations.

Despite the falling temperatures, no significant changes in weather conditions are expected in the next five days. However, the chill is likely to remain relentless throughout January.

Precautions

Authorities have advised caution while traveling, especially at night and early morning, due to reduced visibility. Vulnerable groups are urged to take measures to stay warm and minimise exposure to cold.

As Bangladesh enters deeper into the winter season, the forecast serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather, urging citizens and authorities to remain vigilant and prepared.
