Chief Advisor Yunus to brief foreign diplomats Sunday for first time since takeover

Staff Correspondent

Muhammad Yunus is set to appear before Dhaka-based foreign diplomats to update them on the current affairs of state after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

According to the foreign ministry officials, the chief advisor of the interim government will meet the diplomats at the capital’s InterContinental hotel at 10am on Sunday.

A movement of students and job seekers demanding reforms to quotas for government jobs evolved into protests aimed at toppling the government in early August. Within three weeks, violence across various districts resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives.

On Aug 5, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina resigned her premiership and fled to India in the face of a long march protest to Dhaka.

In the absence of a government and disarray among the police, an interim government led by Yunus was sworn in on Aug 8.

Following the fall of the government, numerous police stations, Awami League offices, activists' homes, and places of worship of the Hindu community were attacked, looted, and set ablaze. During this period, reports emerged of many casualties over three days.

The interim government has initiated cases against Awami League leaders and activists, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Several murder charges have been filed against the Awami League president.

Among those facing trial are former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's adviser, businessman Salman F Rahman, former law minister Anisul Huq, and former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak.

Several recently retired law enforcement officers have also been implicated in murder cases. Ziaul Ahsan, who was dismissed from the army, has been arrested in relation to one such case.

The former director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center, a national telecommunications watchdog, is accused of involvement in extrajudicial killings and disappearances.

There has also been widespread reshuffling of the administration and law enforcement since the fall of the government.

Touhid Hossain, the foreign adviser to the interim government, briefed diplomats at the State Guest House Padma last Monday, outlining the interim government's responsibilities and addressing the current situation.

More than sixty diplomats, including ambassadors and high commissioners from countries such as India, China, the US, the UK, Russia, and Japan, attended the briefing.
