Cenbank starts printing notes with July uprising graffiti

Staff Correspondent

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) has started printing notes with new designs inspired by the July-August uprising, while dropping the image of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The new notes are expected to be released in the market within the next six months.

According to the central bank, the banknotes of Tk20, Tk100, Tk500, and Tk1000 are being printed with new designs on orders from the interim government.

Religious structures, Bengali traditions, and “graffiti” painted during the July uprising will be included in the new notes, it said.

Furthermore, the officials concerned with the central bank and the Ministry of Finance said the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be removed from the current notes.

Initially, the designs of the aforementioned four notes are being changed, and later, the designs of others banknotes will also be redesigned in phases, they said.

Earlier, on 29 September, the Finance Institute Division under Ministry of Finance, wrote to the BB to submit a detailed design proposal for the new note.

However, the main recommendation on printing new notes will be made by the central bank's Currency and Design Advisory Committee.

BB spokesperson and Executive Director Husneara Shikha said the matter of printing new notes has come a long way. “I hope the new notes would be released in the market within the next six months.”
