A case has been filed in court over allegations of vandalism, looting, and arson at the election office and residence of Md. Humayun Kabir Mallik,  BNP-nominated mayor candidate with the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol, during the 2015 municipal election on December 26 at Betagi in Barguna

The case was filed on May 27 under the Speedy Trial Act by Md. Riazul Kabir Babu, younger brother of Betagi Upazila BNP Convener Md. Humayun Kabir Mallik. The case names 26 individuals as accused, along with 150 to 200 unidentified persons.

The plaintiff, Md. Riazul Kabir Babu, confirmed the details of the case on Saturday afternoon.

Notable accused in the case include Betagi Upazila Awami League President and former municipal mayor ABM Golam Kabir, Betagi Upazila Awami League General Secretary and former Upazila Parishad Chairman Md. Maksudur Rahman Forkan, Hosnabad Union Awami League President and former Upazila Chairman Md. Khalilur Rahman Khan, former Mirzaganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Md. Abu Bakar Siddik, Municipal Awami League President Babul Akhtar, former Chhatra League President and former Upazila Vice Chairman Md. Mahadudul Hasan Mohsin, Municipal Chhatra League General Secretary Md. Nadim Hawlader, Upazila Jubo League Finance Secretary Md. Shah Alam Rubel, and Upazila Volunteer League Vice President Md. Rabbi Hawlader, among a total of 26 individuals.

The case statement alleges that the accused are organized terrorists, all of whom are leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League, and Volunteer League. Four days before the Betagi Municipal election held on December 30, 2015, on December 26, the accused, led by Awami League-nominated ‘Boat’ symbol candidate ABM Golam Kabir, attacked the election office of BNP-nominated mayor candidate Md. Humayun Kabir Mallik located on Station Road in Betagi town. Armed with pistols, machetes, cleavers, Chinese axes, iron rods, shovels, cocktail bombs, and petrol, the accused vandalized chairs, tables, almirahs, and other furniture inside the office and set it on fire by pouring petrol. The complaint further states that the accused also vandalized and looted Md. Humayun Kabir Mallik’s residence adjacent to the office.

The plaintiff, Md. Riazul Kabir Babu said,  during the 2015 municipal election, fearing his elder brother’s popularity and anticipating defeat, Awami League’s mayor candidate Golam Kabir resorted to a final tactic by attacking and looting their election office and residence, setting them on fire. At the time, the police refused to register the case, forcing them to file it after the fall of the fascist government.

Betagi Upazila BNP Convener Md. Humayun Kabir Mallik said, “My victory was certain in the 2015 municipal election. But at the last moment, the accused vandalized and set fire to my election office and residence, looting them. I demand swift punishment for all those involved in the incident.”
