Bumper production of sweet pumpkins in Morelganj, farmers happy to get good price

The bumper pumpkin production has been achieved in Morrelganj, an adjacent upazila in world's largest mangrove forest Sundarbans and the growers are happy over getting the fair price of the products.

Morelganj is known as granary of pumpkin in the sheep of Gher whuch smile on the face of the farmer.

As a result, sweet pumpkins from Morelganj are being marketed in various parts of the country, including Kawran Bazaar in the capital Dhaka. A kg of pumpkin is being sold for 15 to 20 taka. Each pumpkin is being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 80 depending on the weight. Going to the surface, it can be seen that in 16 unions of Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat, there are sweet pumpkins all over the village in the fish enclosure.

A sweet pumpkin hangs under this canopy surrounded by green leaves. Farmers are collecting sweet pumpkins from the farm. Not only that, the sweet pumpkins of this village are being sold to wholesalers all over the country after meeting the local demand. Sweet pumpkins of the village are in great demand across the country. During the season, the upazila has set a target of about crores of rupees for winter vegetable production.

Farmers and Agriculture Department believes that the use of new technology in vegetable production has been successful. As a result, vegetable market has developed in Morelganj along with good production. Vegetables are grown in Morelganj throughout the year.

Faria and wholesale traders come from different districts including Dhaka and take it by truck after bargaining. Morelganj Reporters Unity President S.M. Saiful Islam Kabir said that the agriculture department helps the farmers by providing fertilizer, seeds and training. The poor farmers should be supported by various seed companies from time to time with fertilizers and seeds.

Morelganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Saiful Islam said, 200 farmers have cultivated pumpkins on 205 hectares of land under the sub-project titled "Providing material support for sweet pumpkin cultivation in fish areas". They have been assisted with seeds, chemical fertilizers and various materials for pest control.
