BRTC buses to operate as alternatives for trains on important routes
Staff Correspondent
The government has deployed BRTC buses to keep important overland communications routes operational amid an indefinite work boycott observed by railway running staff.
On Tuesday, a railway ministry notification said railway passengers can board BRTC busses from Kamlapaur Railway Station and Dhaka International Airport Railway Station to travel to Chattogram, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Khulna, Cumilla, Bogura and Mymensingh.
They can also return to the capital from these destinations using the bus service with their already purchased train tickets. The bus service will remain operational until further notice, the railway ministry notification said.
On Tuesday midnight, train drivers, guards and ticket checkers across the country went on strike demanding overtime pay benefits.
On Monday, the ministry called for a meeting with the protest leaders to discuss the issue, but the protesters rejected the call upon learning the government would seek more time to meet their demand. The protesters are adamant about securing overtime benefits immediately. The railway ministry later alleged officials had agreed to meet almost all the protesters' demands, but they demanded an unconditional pledge.
