British MP Tulip got flats from aunt Hasina’s allies: UK media

News Desk

Tulip Siddiq, a British treasury minister and ousted dictator Sheikh Hasina’s niece, has used at least three London apartments as her official address despite the properties being owned by people close to Hasina’s despotic regime.

The current residence of Sheikh Rehana, Siddiq’s mother and Hasina’s sister, also has ties to a glaringly questionable pro-Awami League figure.

The UK-based Financial Times and Sunday Times broke the news of Siddiq’s apartments located in Finchley, Hampstead and King’s Cross of London. The last one was gifted to Tulip as no monetary exchange was mentioned in land registration documents, defying the British lawmaker’s claims that her parents purchased it.

Abdul Motalif, a developer and an associate of individuals connected to Hasina, handed over the two-bed King’s Cross apartment.

The Finchley apartment currently belongs to Abdul Karim Nazim, Awami League’s UK unit executive committee member. After renting the apartment out to Siddiq for the first time in 2022, Nazim started enjoying a company with Hasina and other senior figures of her regime, leading to his appointment as a vice-chairman of a pro-Awami League bank in Bangladesh.

Since the fall of Hasina government in a mass uprising on 5 August, a number of pro-Awami League banks have come under radar due to corrupt financial practices.

In line with the trend, Nazim also faces potential scrutiny in the UK for failing to file accounts of some of his companies, likely contributing to their collapse.

The Hampstead residence was given by Moin Ghani, a lawyer who has represented Sheikh Hasina's government, to Siddiq's younger sister, Azmina, in 2009. Tulip lived in the flat for free due to “family ties,” but mentioned it as her legal address upon becoming trustees of several non-profits.

Siddiq used the Hampstead apartment as her address on becoming a trustee of the Camden Arts Centre charity in January 2014, and again two months later, upon beginning affiliation with the Hampstead Wells and Campden Trust.

Her husband, Christian Percy, also listed it as his address in May 2016, when Siddiq was serving as the Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn constituency.
