BNP sent letter to 32 leaders not to run for councilor posts in SCC polls

Sylhet Bureau

A letter has been sent to 32 leaders of the party on behalf of the city BNP urging them not to run for councilor posts in the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) elections.

Nasim Hossain, President of Mahanagara BNP, confirmed on Monday afternoon that these letters have been handed over to potential candidates in the last three days.

Meanwhile, the party has also verbally requested Ariful Haque Chowdhury, who was elected mayor twice in a row on the nomination of BNP in the last two city elections, not to be a candidate. Nasim Hossain said that BNP is not participating in Patano elections.

Therefore, a letter has been sent to the potential councilor candidates among the BNP leaders in general and reserved seats, urging them to refrain from running as candidates. Although the letter was not given to Mayor Ariful Haque, the same request was made verbally.

City BNP president Nasim Hossain and general secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury signed the letter given to the potential councilor candidates. The letter said, "Acting Chairman of BNP Tariq Rahman's specific and clear statement, in this election, the leaders and workers of any level of the party will not be able to be elected for the post of mayor or councilor."

If any of the leaders and workers of the party participate in this rigged election, then strictest organizational measures will be taken against them. We hope you will refrain from this misleading selection. We wish for your sincere cooperation during the final movement of the party in this transitional period of the country.

A source of BNP in the city said that the BNP has come to know about the search for 32 party leaders who want to contest general and reserved seats in 42 wards of the city. A letter has been sent to these potential councilor candidates urging them to abstain from election by the party. In this situation, the party hopes that many people will refrain from the election.

Meanwhile, after talking to several leaders and workers of Trinamool BNP, it is known that 32 leaders have been given party letters, apart from this, more than half a hundred potential councilor candidates known locally as BNP supporters and supporters are active in the election field. However, due to BNP's anti-election activities, these workers-supporters of BNP may not participate in the city elections. Understanding the attitude of the party, many people are gradually withdrawing themselves from the election.

A leader who received the letter from Mahanagar BNP said on condition of anonymity, "I was in an important position in the party. Again, the local people are pushing hard for the election of councilors. In this situation, both are in crisis. But in the end, I have decided to accept the party's decision and abstain from the election for the time being.

When asked whether Sylhet city has been approached by BNP to refrain from the election, City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury said, "I do not want to comment on these issues now." As I said earlier, I will hold a public meeting at 2:30 PM on May 20 at the registry ground of the city to clarify the issue of candidacy.

Whether I will be a candidate or not, it will be clear to the people of the city that day.
