Blaspheming the Prophet: Supervisor of Kohinoor factory in Tejgaon beaten up, detained

Staff Correspondent

A supervisor of Kohinoor Chemical Company was taken into police custody on Tuesday night in the capital’s Tejgaon area, following allegations of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad (S).

The incident occurred earlier in the day. Workers at the factory accused the supervisor, identified as Bidhan Babu, of making offensive comments about the Prophet inside the factory premises.

Protesting the remarks, workers started demanding justice from the authorities.

The situation however escalated and agitated workers at one stage beat up Bidhan Babu, and began demonstrating near Nabisco intersection, blocking the main road from around 2pm. Traffic movement came to a halt as workers and local residents continued the protest throughout the afternoon.

Police and members of the armed forces rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control.

Despite their efforts, the demonstrators refused to leave until they were assured of legal action against Bidhan.

Later in the evening, after several rounds of discussion between the authorities and protesters, the blockade was lifted at around 8pm.

Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station Officer-in-Charge Gazi Shamim said, “We took him into custody around 8:30pm. A case will be filed against him for hurting religious sentiments.”

Those who took the law into their own hands and beat him up though, look set to avoid any form of censure.
