
Betagi BNP leader held over extortion charges

Police in Bettagi upazila of Barguna arrested Shahjamal Mintu (48), Joint Convener of the municipal unit of BNP, on charges of extortion on Tuesday evening from Bettagi Bus Stand area.
In connection with the same case, several other leaders and activists of both the Upazila and Municipal units of BNP have also been accused. The case was filed by Khokon Hawladar, a resident of Ward 3 of Bettagi municipality.
According to the case statement, the primary accused is Md Nesar Uddin Khan (45), convener of the Upazila Swechchhasebak Dal. The second accused is Md Mintu Hawladar (40), joint convener of the Municipal Jubo Dal, and the third accused is Md Shahjamal Mintu alias Mintu Akon (48), joint convener of the Municipal BNP. Additionally, four to five unidentified individuals have also been named in the case.
Bettagi police sources stated that the case was filed under Sections 4 and 5 of the Speedy Trial Act, 2000 (amended 2010), and is listed as CR case number 60/2025 in the Barguna court. The case has been registered at Bettagi Police Station as Case No. 7, dated April 22, 2025.
According to the FIR, on the morning of April 14, 2025, around 10am, the accused were allegedly collecting extortion money using fabricated receipts from battery-run rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, and pickup vans near the tempo stand adjacent to the municipality road.
Bettagi Police OC Moniruzzaman Monir said, a case has been filed by one Khokon Hawladar, and we’ve registered it accordingly. So far, one of the accused—Mintu—has been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
